How is Franco’s Dictatorship Remembered? A Description of Shared Narratives about Dictatorship in Spain Across Three Generations.

Abstract

On July 18 1936, fascism staged a coup in Spain. As a result, the democratic government of the Second Republic is put to an end and a dictatorship is established. Violence and repression were constantly present throughout the almost forty years which it lasted. After the death of the dictator in 1975, a process of democratic transition begins. Given these antecedents, our objective is to study how different historical moments -the dictatorship, the democratic transition, and the establishment of democracy- have marked the generations that have lived them, building their way of understanding the world and themselves.

We intend to study the master narratives, the cultural narratives that exist around these historical periods, how they are reproduced, and finally; how they are appropriated by individuals for the construction of their self. Thus, the principal aim is to identify these narratives, and the role that they have in the construction of self. This will be done through in-depth, autobiographical interviews, where we can trace these cultural narratives in the personal narratives of individuals. The participants will be members of three generations, who have lived the historical moments described during their early adulthood, from the same family. The fact that they belong to the same family is, on the one hand, to be able to know the transmission mechanisms of the master narratives, as well as being able to connect these narratives with personal self. A description of these cultural narratives shared by each generation will be presented.

This work is part of my current PhD project. Since we are still in the data collection phase, we cannot advance results. However, we hope to be able to present them by the date of the congress.
